London: day 3

We met downstairs at 10:30, but something drastic had happened just before we were to leave. A students phone had been hustled right out from under her nose in the hotel lobby. More of these similar events happened throughout the day to others in our group as well.

We walked to the Aldgate station and took the line to Liverpool, then from Liverpool to Oxford Circus. In soho, we came upon Carnaby Street, there’s lots of shops and even more people. This is the area where another two thefts were trying to take place within our group.

Then we went on to the CNN international headquarters for a brief meeting with an executive, Heidi Berger. Ms Berger showed us around the newsroom and answered a few of our questions. One of the things she regrets not taking part in was when she was in university. She wishes she learned a second language and studied abroad. She said that it helped one of her colleagues tremendously within his career and landed him in an important part of translating and covering international news. We then headed to Browns for a spot of tea and a quick snack before we headed back to the hotel.

The tube was tricky to figure out but we ended up getting back to the closer station than before, Aldgate East. Some workers had been putting out a fresh copy of the Evening Standard.

The worker handed it to me as I descended down into the underground and said “thank you” to me for taking the copy. It is to my understanding that the people and the news companies in the UK find it very important that everyone has the chance to know what’s happening. The newspapers are generally free and are always being handed out – even if they’re not workers.

We had about a two hour break in the hotel and joined a tour for Jack the Ripper. Media played a big part of the killer’s personification, they often tried to depict the killer and try to get some sort of hint to discover who it was. The attention drawn to the case helped the public to catch on to try to find the killer and to embrace unity within the community.
