Edward Scissorhands cinematography

Edward Scissorhands rated PG-13 and released in 1990written and directed by Tim Burton. The film takes place in a cookie-cutter utopia where nothing is out of place, when an Avon saleswoman goes to an almost-abandoned home and brings him to the town. The residents took a huge interest in the outsider, until one lie ruined his reputation in the town and the rest of the civilians turned on him.

In this scene, the cinematographer uses a high angle to look down upon the BBQ; the Boggs family is hosting it for their new visitor. Along with this scene, you can see the T-Rex that Edward used his talent for topiary for. The fact that the cinematographer used this side, where the T-Rex looks humongous compared to the townspeople, rather than the side with the family hedge. The metaphor is that Edward is the monstrous T-Rex about set panic and disaster to the residents, that his newest and closest feeling to family is going to be gone.

One of the ladies in the town, Esmeralda, has been depicted as wildly attracted to men other than her husband and flirts relentlessly and obsessively. She wants what she knows she shouldn’t be doing. The lie she told was that Edward tried to seduce her, then reducing the trust he had. In reality, Esmeralda is the one that tried to seduce Edward, resulting in him running away.

This scene depicts Edward roasting kabobs over the grill on his scissor hands and talking with one of the residents. Edward looks passive, sad even. The resident looks like he pities Edward and feels that he wish that the thing that cripples Ed. never happened. The brightly colored vegetables that are skewered on Edward’s scissors are another metaphor that describes how the colorful townspeople feel after the lie is told. The cinematographer uses a low angle in this scene to increase the viewer’s feeling of shared confusion with Edward. Why did the townspeople mock him by putting food on his appendages? The light coming from the upper right corner of the shot is meant to be the sun, since it is behind the actors it creates a shadow on their faces.

The cinematographer uses a deep focus, the topiary, lawn and background are all in focus. The topiary int he foreground looks as if it is running away from the town, foreshadowing the end of the movie. Either the running of Edward from the town, Kim (the older daughter of the Boggs’ family) chasing after him or Jim (Kim’s boyfriend) chasing him and wanting to cause him harm.

This film has shown the audience that it is fine to be different, but that they need to stick up for themselves when being mocked or threatened. All audiences need to understand that all differences need to be embraced with passion and understanding to be able to understand the underlying themes of the story line.
