Episode two of season one of The Office is called “Diversity Day”. In it, there’s a scene where Michael makes sure to walk out of his office at the same time as the rep from HQ; he goes up to Oscar to ask how his weekend was, introduces him to the rep as Oscar. Oscar then had to say his last name and Michael says, “See? I don’t even know. First name basis.” I feel that was incredibly pushed towards their office’s rep there from HQ because that’s not even really how a conversation would go down. Michael then interrupts Jim during his important commission call to tell him to get ready for diversity day, “I wish everyday was diversity day.” As a cultural we’re supposed to see each other’s differences but then accept them. This just seems forced and uncalled for for Michael to say stuff like this. During the presentation the rep begins by saying “we believe 99% of the problems in the work place arise simply out of ignorance”. Michael then says “This is a color free zone here.” then begins to point out that “Stanley! I don’t see you as another race.” and rep goes o to explain “that we don’t have to pretend that they’re colorblind, but instead to celebrate diversity” (as it should be, but it’s not). Dwight then says “Can we stay away from gay people?” the rep then says that it’s not a race and Dwight says that other races are not always tolerant of gay people.
Michael again with the racist statements by asking what the rep’s name is (Mr. Brown) and starts laughing and says oh that’s the first test, I will not call you that. And when the rep says that it actually is his name, Michael responds with disbelief that he just did that. Michael then interrupts and does the Chris Rock routine (?) and the rep has to yell to get him to stop. It was actually super ignorant and disruptive that he acts like that. He’s a literal child (why I don’t watch The Office). Then when Toby says “We’re not all gonna sit in the circle indian style are we?” the rest of the office laughs except Michael. Michael responds back and says that it wasn’t was offensive and lame and makes him leave.
When someone had to leave (she’s indian and I don’t remember her name) but he says yes you leave, namaste and puts his hands together to bow. Like ???? What the HELL are you doing? That is a religion that she might not be apart of. He’s being prejudice against their skin color when he barely knows his workers. He then goes on to making his workers put cards on their foreheads of a type of race, and then says “I want you to treat other people like the race that is on their forehead.” later he says “You realize I had no one be an Arab, i thought that’d be too explosive. No pun intended.” Yes Michael is being a racist asshole, I have no idea how Steve Carrell was able to pull this off without yelling at the writers for this.
