The Maddest Men

mad men 1

We’ve all heard how glamorous the 1960s were, but did we live through them? Most of us, probably not. Now we have the chance to in the show Mad Men. It’s based in the 60s, where women are going into the job force and getting semi-equal pay for what they do. They’re also getting slut-shamed and encouraged about sex, helping their male coworkers getting in trouble for having affairs.

In season one, episode “Red in the Face”, the secretaries get to try on lipsticks for one of the advertising firm’s client. How ever, one of the girls didn’t get the color she wanted, so she didn’t try any on at all. She was made fun of behind her back by the men in the office and then when they talked to her about it, they thought she was very intelligent in the matter. They offered her a writing job at the agency, which is nearly unheard of there, and Peggy’s “boss” (head secretary?) almost seemed quite jealous of her.

This episode also reinforces that women are over sexualized and blamed for it, when it wasn’t their fault in the first place. In the episode, Donald Draper’s wife, Betty, was merely just laughing at Don’s boss’s stories. When they started cleaning up dinner, the boss hit on her, and even made moves to suggest that he wanted her: “And when I go to bed tonight, I’ll be thinking of you for sure.” Who says that to someone??? Creepy much? anyways, Don blamed his wife, saying she was making googly eyes and was giggling at the stories. She didn’t even stick up for herself but to say “Don, he’s your boss, I was just being kind.”

Compared to today’s standards, this type of this can still happen. Women aren’t sex objects, they’re over sexualized as it is for the male’s gaze. This needs to stop.
